Air Indias total loss stands at USD 750 million. Air India can hull entire insurance worth USD 50 million. The entire insurance includes passenger and third party liability.

"The Air India fleet is insured by four private companies -- Reliance General, Bajaj Allianz, HDFC Ergo and Iffco Tokio. Reliance General is the lead insurer," said head of underwriting at Bajaj Allianz General Insurance Company, T.A. Ramalingam. It is understood that Reliance General had transferred the majority of the risk to re-insurers.

Addressing a press conference a day after the tragedy that claimed 158 lives, Air India Chairman and Managing Director Arvind Jadhav said they were in talks with insurance companies, including Reliance Insurance and General Insurance Company, on payment of compensation. "We are announcing an interim compensation. We will give them money immediately," he said.
